If you don’t know, my name is Mary and I started Mi Madre Candle Co. as a way to honor the rituals, scents, and moments that bring comfort and meaning—those small pauses that feel like home. For me, this season has always been a reminder to create small rituals that signal it’s time to unwind. One of my favorite ways to rest is simple but grounding: lighting a candle, settling into a good book, and enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day. That quiet moment becomes an intentional pause — a way to release the day and reconnect with myself.

What Didn’t Work Taught Me the Most

This past year has been nothing short of an adventure.

Running two very different businesses at the same time has stretched me, humbled me, and taught me lessons I never could have learned any other way. One business is rooted in creativity, storytelling, and product-making; the other is grounded in service, systems, and impact. Both have demanded growth—and both have given me plenty of reasons to pause, reflect, and feel grateful.

The Adventure of Building or Rebuilding

Entrepreneurship rarely moves in a straight line. Some days feel like wins stacked neatly on top of each other. Other days feel like backtracking, second-guessing, and learning the same lesson twice.

This year reminded me that building something meaningful is an ongoing experiment. You try. You adjust. You learn. And then you try again—with a little more wisdom and a lot more patience.

What Worked in Marketing

Not everything landed, but a few things consistently showed up as wins:

• Storytelling over selling. When I shared the how and why—the behind-the-scenes content attached to the memories, traditions, and inspiration behind products—people leaned in. Authentic stories created real connections.

• Showing up consistently. Markets, social posts, emails, and conversations mattered more than perfection. As a former perfectionist, I learned that doing and not being perfect is the key. Progress came from being present.

• Community-based marketing. Word-of-mouth, local events, and repeat customers proved that trust is the strongest marketing tool there is. Each day, I work to keep that trust.

• Education and value. In my service-based work, clarity and expertise built credibility far more than flashy promotion.

What Didn’t Work

Some strategies looked great on paper—but reality had other plans:

• Overextending with too many ideas at once. More products didn’t always mean more sales. In the following year, you will see this in our product line. We will introduce some new products, but some old ones will go.

• Chasing trends. Not every trending scent or product fits my brand or my customer.

• Assuming excitement equals demand. Personal enthusiasm doesn’t always translate to market readiness. This enthusiasm also extends to supporters who cheer me on, but don’t always know how it fits my brand. Understanding what my customers want is more important than personal enthusiasm for a product.

These moments weren’t failures—they were feedback.

Trying New Products & New Scents

Experimentation was both exciting and humbling.

Some products sold out quickly. Others quietly reminded me that not every idea is meant to stay. Testing new scents taught me how subjective fragrance truly is—and how important it is to listen to customers instead of guessing.

I learned:

• Small test batches matter

• Feedback is gold and should be consistently sought so that even a 1% improvement means refining the product and exceeding customers’ expectations.

  Letting go of a product is part of refining a brand

• Timing also matters. Knowing what our target customers want and when is a critical piece to launching new products.

Every product that didn’t perform still served a purpose—it taught me something I needed to know.

Still Learning, Still Growing

Both businesses continue to evolve. Systems improve. Branding sharpens. Confidence grows. I’m learning how to pivot without panic, how to rest without guilt, and how to celebrate progress even when it feels small.

If there’s one truth I’m carrying forward, it’s this:

I am still learning—and that’s exactly where I’m supposed to be. I know that learning is a constant and holds so much truth that it will sustain me through many more years.

Our brand was born from love, memory, and the desire to keep those we cherish close, especially, my mother, Olivia and Mother in law, Angela, and recently, my best friend, Melinda, all these women left such a profound influence on me.

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet comfort of a candle — the way a single flame can bring peace to a space, how a familiar scent can instantly take you back to a memory, a place, a person. For me, candles have always been more than just something you light. They’ve been a part of my story, my home, and my way of honoring the people and moments I hold close.

But I never imagined that love would one day grow into a business — and not just any business, but Mi Madre Candle Co: a tribute to family, tradition, and all the things that matter most.

Where It All Began

Mi Madre Candle Co started, like many things, as a small spark — something creative that I tried, not knowing how much joy I would find. I would experiment with scents in my kitchen, trying to recreate the smells that reminded me of home, special moments and cozy evenings spent with family. The more I poured, the more I fell in love with the process: the creativity, the patience, the intention behind every step.

But the real turning point came when I started sharing it with others, something shifted. People didn’t just like the candle… they felt it.

That’s when I knew this passion had a greater purpose.

Honoring My Roots

The name Mi Madre means “My Mother” in Spanish — a name that felt like home from the moment, my husband proposed it because he thought it was a great way to honor my mother and his mom. But moreover, this business is deeply rooted in who I am: a daughter, a mother, a woman carrying her family’s story forward. Every candle I create is a reflection of that. Whether it’s inspired by childhood memories, cultural traditions, or simple moments of joy, Mi Madre is about honoring where we come from while creating something meaningful for others to enjoy.

Turning Passion Into a Business

Starting a candle business wasn’t something I had planned for. But I felt like it was calling me since the moment I started creating candles. I had heart; not much else but it just felt right. But I also knew I had a whole lot of learning to do. From sourcing materials and testing wax blends to building a website and learning how to ship orders safely, I figured it out step by step (with plenty of trial and error along the way).

I poured candles by hand, set up a shop online, and showed up at local markets with a folding table, a few dozen candles, and a big dream. And slowly, it began to grow — one scent, one story, one customer at a time.

What Keeps Me Going

This business isn’t just about candles. It’s about connection. It’s about the people who say, “This scent reminds me of my grandmother’s home,” or “I light this every night to wind down after a long day.” It’s about creating products that make people feel seen, soothed, and loved.

It’s also about my own healing and growth — creating something with intention, building a brand that reflects who I am and what I value, and showing my son that dreams are worth chasing, especially when they’re fueled by love.

A Father’s Day Reflection: Honoring the Men Who Shaped Us

Father’s Day brings a mix of love, memory, and reflection. Our story, like many families’, isn’t simple. It’s layered, imperfect, and deeply meaningful.

After our parents divorced, Dad suddenly found himself raising three young daughters on his own. A single father trying to hold it all together—navigating work and a small business, parenting, school, and the whirlwind of raising girls. But he did his best and tried to instill in his girls the value of hard work and family.

Looking back, I realize just how much he shaped who we are. He was not an easy dad, and despite working hard, money was tight, and there were always chores to do. You would often catch one of us helping him in his print shop to finish a job such as collating papers, making notepads, or whatever odd job he thought that particular child could handle at the time. Housework was often left to us as well. No matter how old or small, there was a chore that fit. We all vividly remember having to pull weeds in the yard or mow the lawn as we got older. Whatever the chore, it had to be done before we could watch Saturday morning cartoons. I assure you, we were never happy about it, and at times resulted in multiple outbursts and tantrums. However, because he insisted and he didn’t let us take the easy way out, he taught us the value of hard work, independence, knowing when to speak up, and ultimately, how to take care of ourselves.

He wasn’t perfect, but what mattered most was that he showed up every day and still does. Whenever we need him or there is something important happening in our lives, he is there. Usually with a camera in hand and a sports cowboy hat on his head. (No….not just any hat will do either!)

Today, we have a strong relationship with our dad. We see him with adult eyes now—flawed, yes, but also full of heart, strength, and humor. He did the best he could in a tough situation, and that love and effort shaped us into the women we are today.

Our story also includes another important man—Joe, our stepfather. Joe never tried to take our father’s place. Instead, he built his meaningful relationship with each of us. He was a steady presence and a supporter. Never leaving Mom’s side and always showing us love for his family.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate both of these men. Our dad, who raised us with grit, love, and a deep belief in our strength. And our stepfather, who chose to love us like his own. Two different men, both irreplaceable parts of our story.

She spoke her mind, danced to her rhythm, and showed love in the most real, raw, and genuine ways. She’d tease you one moment and laugh it off the next. That was her way—fierce and loving all at once. 

She wasn’t one to sugarcoat things, but you never had to question where you stood with her. She cared deeply. She gave her time freely, always wanting us to come together to celebrate. To her, this is what made life memorable, and she could make even ordinary moments feel like something worth remembering.  Her love was unconditional and provided comfort, illuminating even the darkest moments of our lives. Much like the soft glow of a lit candle, she brought light, tranquility, and love into our home, reminding us that even in tough times, we could find peace and solace in each other. That is what I learned from my mom and what I have passed down to my son.

Since she passed, I’ve come to see time so differently. Time is the thread that ties love and memory together. And when someone you love is gone, you realize how each second spent with them was a gift. Lighting a candle has become one of the ways I feel close to her. It’s a quiet ritual. A soft flame that reminds me: she’s still with me.
