Why Candle Making Might Be the Break From Your Phone You Didn't Know You Needed
Candle-Making as a way to connect with friends and family.
When was the last time you spent an hour with someone without checking your phone?
Not because you forgot it at home.
Not because your battery died.
But because you were actually having too much fun to look at it.
That is one of the things I love about candle making.
When you sit down at a table with a group of people and start choosing fragrances, pouring wax, and creating something with your own hands, something naturally happens.
The phones become less important.
The conversation becomes more important.
And before you know it, you're laughing, telling stories, comparing fragrances, and enjoying the people sitting around the table.
Sometimes We Just Need a Reason to Get Together
We all say it.
"We need to get together soon."
And then life happens.
Work gets busy. The kids need something. There are errands to run, dinners to make, and approximately 47 things sitting on your to-do list.
Even when we finally make plans, we often end up sitting around looking at our phones.
Candle making gives you a reason to slow down.
You have something to do together. You're not just meeting for the sake of meeting. You're creating something.
And that little bit of structure can make it easier to relax, talk, and actually enjoy being together.
It Doesn't Matter Who You Bring
That's another thing I love about candle making: there isn't just one type of person who can enjoy it.
Maybe it's a girls' night out with your best friends.
Maybe it's a date night where you're tired of doing the same dinner-and-movie routine.
Maybe you and your sister haven't had time together in months.
Maybe it's a mother and daughter looking for something fun to do together.
Maybe it's a group of coworkers who spend most of their time communicating through email and meetings and need an excuse to interact like actual humans.
Or maybe you're celebrating something.
A birthday. A bridal gathering. A new job. A holiday. A friendship. Or simply surviving another week.
You don't have to have a special occasion.
Sometimes getting together is the occasion.
You Don't Have to Be "Crafty"
One of the first things people sometimes tell me when they hear about candle making is:
"I'm not really crafty."
That's okay.
You don't need to know how to make candles before you walk through the door.
That's part of the fun.
You get to experiment with fragrance, learn something new, and make decisions along the way. And because everyone is creating their own candle, there's no pressure for everything to look or smell exactly the same.
Your candle becomes yours.
And there is something satisfying about leaving with something you made yourself.
Put Down the Phone. Pick Up the Conversation.
I'm not saying phones are bad.
They're how we communicate with people we love. They're how we take pictures, find directions, check the weather, answer questions, and keep up with everything happening in our lives.
But sometimes being connected to everything means we're not fully connected to the people right in front of us.
A candle-making class gives you a natural opportunity to change that.
Your hands are busy.
Your brain is engaged.
You're learning something.
And there's a table full of people around you.
You don't have to force conversation because the experience gives you something to talk about.
"What fragrance did you choose?"
"Wait…you mixed those two?"
"Smell this one."
"I think I just made my new favorite candle."
And then somehow you're talking about everything else.
The Candle Isn't Really the Point
Of course, you get to take a candle home.
But I think the candle becomes something more than just another thing sitting on a shelf.
Later, when you light it, you may remember the night you made it.
You may remember your best friend sitting beside you.
You may remember the ridiculous conversation you had with your coworkers.
You may remember a date night that turned out better than expected.
You may remember laughing with your mom, your daughter, or your sister.
That's what makes handmade experiences special.
You're not just bringing home a product.
You're bringing home a memory attached to it.
Maybe We Need More Experiences That Don't Happen on a Screen
We're so used to documenting everything.
Take the picture.
Post the picture.
Check the likes.
Respond to the comments.
Scroll a little.
And then do it all again.
There's nothing wrong with sharing the good moments. But there is something wonderful about having a few moments that don't need to be photographed, posted, or explained to anyone.
You were there.
You experienced it.
You laughed.
You made something.
You spent time with people you care about.
And maybe that's enough.
Come Make a Candle. Stay for the Memories.
That's really what we hope our candle-making classes at Mi Madre Candle Co. in Round Rock, Texas can be.
A chance to try something different.
A chance to be creative.
A chance to laugh.
A chance to spend time with people you care about.
And, yes, a chance to make a candle.
Whether you're planning a girls' night, date night, birthday, team gathering, or just looking for something different to do together, candle making gives you a reason to slow down and be present.
Because sometimes the best part of an experience isn't what you take home.
It's who you spent the time with.
